Fly Mobile's B430 DS marries Bold's keyboard, two SIMs, mystery meat OS

 

BlackBerry users tend to be die-hard, rabid defenders of the platform, which leads us to believe that many would throw up in their mouths just a little bit when seeing their beloved Bolds get bastardized in the name of bringing an honest-to-goodness KIRF to market. Meet Indian firm Fly Mobile's B430 DS, a phone that borrows freely from elements of both the Curve 8900 and Bold 9000, but not in two fairly important places: the trackball and -- of course -- the operating system. It seems the B430 is a dumbphone that offers up integrated Nimbuzz IM, Snaptu social networking, and Opera Mini right in ROM -- all apps that stand to benefit from the Bold's classic QWERTY keyboard design. It also has support for two SIMs, a 1.3 megapixel cam (not quite up to task with the genuine article's 2 megapixel unit), and a price that's sure to be thousands of rupees below that of any real BlackBerry -- thing is, getting it on sale outside of India without meeting legal resistance might be a bit of a challenge. It's on sale in the local market now.

Canada's WIND Mobile making a play for more cash to expand

 

There's a good deal of excitement about the value that Canada's WIND Mobile is bringing to the table -- that's the luxury of being the scrappy startup with new spectrum in a market dominated by the Old Guard -- but the big problem, of course, is that WIND's native footprint currently covers just Toronto and Calgary. The carrier's backed by Orascom on the strength of a $700 million loan that it says still gives it "ample runway" with upcoming launches in Ottawa, Edmonton, and Vancouver, but to really go big, it's looking to raise some capital from banks right now to grow its network and "develop partnerships" that enable it to reduce or eliminate an estimated $200 to $300 million deficit over the next four years. Presumably, by "partnerships," WIND's talking about mutually-beneficial roaming and sublease / MVNO-style deals -- something it can only achieve with a sizable network of its own. Buzz will only carry these guys so far and MobileSyrup says they've only inked about 10,000 subscribers at this point, so it'll be interesting to see how and when (or even if) they can cross the line and become a legit contender against the Rogers, Bells, and Teluses (Telii?) of the world.

T-Mobile signed up for HTC Espresso, new Garmin phone in first half of the year?

 

Bringing the mighty HD2 on board is already quite a win for T-Mobile USA, but the fun doesn't stop there -- clearly these guys must have some other exclusives in the works, and TmoNews is noticing a tip trend toward a couple specific devices. First up, the phone we've heard rumored as the HTC Espresso is said to be coming to Big Magenta (we just made that up, you like it?) as either the myTouch 2 or myTouch Slide. Why "Slide," you ask? Well, there'll apparently be some sort of QWERTY keyboard in tow -- which, if true, hopefully means the carrier will be getting its non-QWERTY Android love from somewhere else. Next, T-Mobile is said to be working with Garmin (or Garmin-Asus, as it were) on a handset, something that would make perfect sense considering that we just saw an AWS-compliant device from those guys in the FCC. In terms of timing, we're rumored to be looking at May for both of these -- but considering how rarely these dates stay steady this far in advance, we wouldn't even raise an eyebrow if they slipped into the second half.
